A policeman questioned on suspicion of causing the death of G20 protester Ian Tomlinson could face a manslaughter charge.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has passed a file on the case to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Mr Tomlinson, 47, died after being struck with a baton and pushed to the ground during angry clashes between G20 protesters and police.

The alleged attack, which was caught on camera, is at the centre of a storm of criticism about how the demonstrations were policed.

Legal experts are considering whether the Metropolitan Police officer, who is suspended from duty, should be charged with manslaughter.

Mr Tomlinson’s widow, Julia, urged prosecutors to let a jury decide whether a police officer played any role in his death.

More than 40 IPCC investigators visited 190 premises in a search for CCTV of the incident and footage was recovered from more than 220 cameras.

A final decision on whether to bring a case is likely to involve Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer.
