The salaries received by MPs before their expenses are taken into account puts them in the top 3% of the British population by earnings, it was claimed today.

Their basic pay of £64,766 means they are the fourth highest-paid politicians in Europe, with only Italian, Austrian and Irish legislators earning more.

And once the public subsidy for their gold-plated pensions – worth £17,468 a year – is factored in, a backbencher actually earns £82,234 a year.

That is before the system of generous perks and allowances is added, which has seen the cost to the taxpayer of the average MP spiral to almost £250,000.

By comparison, the median gross annual earnings for UK adults in work last year was £25,100.

Matthew Elliott of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, which carried out the research said: “Some MPs have had the gall to try to hijack the recent expenses scandal as an opportunity to push up their own pay even further.
