Pupils could be immunised against swine flu in schools

Every pupil in Britain could be immunised against swine flu in school under plans being considered by the Government.
School nurses, health volunteers and GPs would deliver injections to 8.5 million five to 16 year-olds at every school in the country as part of what would be the biggest mass vaccination since the 1964 smallpox operation.
Should such a plan be implemented, it raises questions about whether there are enough health professionals to administer the swine flu jabs, with the Royal College of Nursing recently warning that the average school nurse looks after more than 2,500 pupils.
The news comes as Marie-Paule Kieny, WHO’s vaccine director, said vaccine manufacturers are on track to start delivering the first batches in September.
While the first wave of the pandemic appears to be on its way out, with the number of new cases of swine flu in England and Scotland falling significantly, the mass vaccination would be a means of protecting children from a second wave of the virus expected in the autumn.
The estimated new cases of swine flu last week was 30,000 compared with 110,000 the week before, showing the pandemic has now past its peak in England, according to Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer. Read full article…
