The NHS swine-flu hot line is employing 16-year-olds to assess suspected cases of the potentially deadly virus.

The 15 teenagers are paid up to £16.40 an hour to read out a prepared list of questions and distribute Tamiflu, the antiviral drug which is known to have violent side-effects.

Many have been working late into the night at a hot line call centre in Watford, contravening employment law guidelines for under-18s.

Sandra Gidley, the Liberal Democrat health spokesman, accused the Government of putting the public at risk by allowing inexperienced staff to be employed.

“Expecting people with little or no experience to work on such a complex subject is irresponsible,’” she told the Daily Mail.

The Watford call centre is one of 19 set up in July after Health Secretary Andy Burnham announced a National Pandemic Flu Service. Read full article…
