‘Dialogue cops’ to patrol climate summit

Specially trained officers intended as a point of contact between the police and potential protestors

Police in Copenhagen will appoint officers to communicate with protestors during December’s UN Climate Conference, reports Berlingske Tidende newspaper.

Mogens Lauridsen, the Copenhagen police operations manager for the summit, said the officers would be specially marked and ‘pre-designated to engage in dialogue’.
The number of dialogue officers to patrol the streets had not yet been determined but all of them would receive special training in conflict resolution.

An estimated 30,000 protestors are expected in Copenhagen during the nine-day summit.

Earlier this week, the Copenhagen police department unveiled vans equipped with video cameras to record clashes with protestors.

Even with the extra measures, Lauridsen said the department was planning for ‘normal’ police action.
