Will Afghanistan be NATO’s Vietnam?

NATO forces are fighting a bloody war in Afghanistan which seems to be escalating – will it turn into another Vietnam?
The Taliban are becoming increasingly bold in their attacks on Western targets in the Hindu Kush.
A bomb recently exploded right outside NATO’s HQ, killing eight people and wounding 100.
It is now feared that the war in the central Asian country is turning into a second Vietnam.
The Vietnam War lasted ten years from 1965-75 and left almost 58,000 American soldiers dead and another 153,000 injured.
But Afghan expert Peter Scholl-Latour said: “You can’t compare the Vietnam War with the Afghan intervention. It is a war of attrition, it makes no sense because the enemy al-Qaeda is scattered over the whole world.”
But Mr. Scholl-Latour admitted there are some similarities. “People thought the Vietnam War would also be over quickly,” he added. Read full article…
