Irish double plastic bag tax to 40p seven years after being first nation to introduce levy

Ireland, the first nation to tax every plastic bag given out in shops, is to double its levy to around 40p.

The seven-year-old policy has already generated more than £109million and helped to massively reduce waste.

Now the tax will be doubled from 22 euro cents to 44 cents per bag as part of an environmental bill being published next month.

The Irish Department of the Environment said it wanted ensure a ’sufficient deterrent’ to shoppers who arrive at checkout counters with no shopping bags of their own.

Here in Britain, the Daily Mail’s Banish the Bags campaign has been instrumental in a radical shift by shoppers who now take their own bags to the supermarket in record numbers.
