Geldof: Lisbon referendum should have been EU wide

Prague, Oct 12 (CTK) – A referendum on the Lisbon treaty should have been held in all EU member states and not only in Ireland, Irish musician and activist Bob Geldof, who attends the Forum 2000 conference in Prague, indicated Monday.

Geldof said the EU is a great project, but politicians and Brussels cannot develop it without a pan-European debate and without people’s participation in the decision-making.

This is the EU’s democratic deficit, Geldof said, adding that EU leaders are changing the structure of the EU 27 regardless of people’s views.

If Czechs had voted on the Lisbon treaty in a referendum, it would have solved the problem with President Vaclav Klaus, Geldof added.

Eurosceptical Klaus has not yet signed the treaty to complete the ratification process in the Czech Republic though both houses of parliament have passed it.

Last Friday Klaus said he wants an opt-out for Czechs from the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, a part of the Lisbon treaty, as a condition for his possible signing the treaty. Read full article…

What can I say? He’s right about the vote being held in all 27 nations so that the entire process could be more democratic. It’s the best idea he’s had in years. I would also add that the entire vote be closely monitored in all 27 nations. The vote was not monitored well in Ireland and was open to extreme fraud–which, the evidence indicates actually happened.

Put the whole Lisbon 2 to a EU wide vote that is monitored well. Only then will the results reflect the true vision of freedom loving people from all EU nations. (Notice I said nations and not “states”). No more bully boy Barroso and his threats to Ireland or anyone else.
