Klaus: Lisbon treaty is transitory

Prague, Oct 22 (CTK) – The Lisbon Treaty is a transitory document, Czech President Vaclav Klaus said after a lecture by Polish MEP Ryszard Legutko (Law and Justice) delivered in Prague Thursday.

Klaus added that Europe needs people like him to remain democratic.

He did not say what his further steps related to the Lisbon treaty ratification will be.

The Czech Republic is the last EU country that has not yet ratified the treaty. Only the signature of Klaus is missing.

Klaus recently demanded the opt-out for Czechs from the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, a part of the treaty, in fears that the Charter might enable German deportees to claim their former property on Czech soil, confiscated from them on the basis of the post-war Benes decrees.

Legutko said in his address that he believes the present European project is not open and does not allow a democratic debate on the EU development.

Klaus pointed out that the EU definitely has been advantageous for the Czech Republic and the other EU member states.

He said he supported the opening of markets and removal of barriers, but he said unification and gleichschaltung prevailed now in the debate on European integration.
