There Is A Way To Bring The EU Down. The British Way

Adam Lovejoy: I don’t know about you, but I have an instinctive dislike for the European Union. It has a whiff of the KGB about it, smacks of the old Soviet Union too much for my comfort. Unelected commissars, who call themselves commissioners, sitting in Brussels and coming up with stuff that no one really needs or wants: bananas should be all the same size and straight only, political correctness should be considered a religion, anyone who does not accept global warming is a pervert, sex outside marriage is the only sex that really matters. You know, the usual EU madness.

And now that they have pushed through that Lisbon treaty of theirs, things will be getting even worse. We will have a European Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the EUSSR, just like it was with the bad old USSR: an unelected government running a federal superstate and not giving a damn about the people who live in it. And you know what is really spooky? Just like the old Soviet Union did, the EU is now waging a meaningless war in Afghanistan, pretending to be saving the Afghans from the insurgents while propping up a corrupt regime. The likeliness is even more sinister as just like most people in the old Soviet Union were against the invasion of Afghanistan by the Red Army but no one in Moscow paid any attention, the same is happening now with the EU, where the majority of people are opposed to the presence of NATO forces in the very same country, but no one at the top is listening.

And it will get much, much worse. The man who is tipped to be the first EU President, Belgian Prime Minister Van Rompuy, is already talking about the need to give Brussels tax-raising powers. That guy Rompuy, who looks like a villain from a James Bond movie, found the perfect place to spell out his vision of the EU future: a meeting of the secret world government, the Bilderberg group, that had specially gathered in a château outside Brussels, obviously to approve all the main candidates for the top jobs in the new look Europe. Why on earth should the Bilderberg group have anything to do with deciding the future of the EU, is anybody’s guess. And if that was not enough, Italy’s government revealed this week its intention to push through the idea of creating a joint European army.

Things are moving fast, now that the new EU constitution, cunningly hidden in the Lisbon treaty, has become law. I would not be surprised if some hotheads would soon be suggesting that national parliaments should be disbanded a quickly as possible and that national governments should be relieved of their powers, apart from purely ceremonial duties. And how long would it before the EU secret police would start snatching people from the streets for their anti-European views and questioning them in the dungeons in the basement of the European Council where the mighty President would reside?

So what now? What can be done to stop this onslaught of the commissars? It is hard to see most of the 27 members of the EU standing up to the EUSSR. They have their own motives for that. France and Germany see the EU as a means of strengthening their power in Europe. Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy are too dependent on the EU economically and the nations of Central and Eastern Europe have joined the club simply because they are hoping to milk it for the subsidies and grants that would supposedly make them prosperous. (How stupid can you be?) Ireland has lost it completely and all the tiny states are too irrelevant to do anything.

So it leaves Britain that can blow this whole disgraceful set up from within, as it makes no point for it to ask Brussels to return some of the powers that the EU had snatched from the British government and parliament. So the future Conservative government in Britain should call a referendum on one simple issue: ‘Do we stay in the EU or do we leave? Tick the right box’. And I can bet you that close to 70 per cent of the British people would vote to pull out of the EU before it becomes the EUSSR. Read more…
