Thousands of people in Spain’s Basque Country have held demonstrations to protest against Spanish detention policies.

On Saturday, many of the protesters urged the Spanish government to grant amnesties to members of the Basque separatist group ETA, calling them “political prisoners.”

The demonstrations were organized by a collection of Basque parties.

At issue is government detention policies which have most of the approximately 600 people found guilty of terrorism and supporting terrorism incarcerated hundreds of kilometers from their homes.

The protesters said the separation is inhumane.

In the past, relatives of the prisoners received government subsidies to make the trip to visit their detained relatives. But a court ruling blocking those subsidies was recently upheld by a higher court. The ruling Socialist Party of Spain’s Basque Country also opposes the subsidies.
