ONE of the audits revealed how more than €800,000 was spent using FAS corporate credit cards in just seven years.

Between 2002 and 2008, a total of €811,198 was charged by six credit card holders on eight credit cards paid for by FAS.

The card holders included former director general Rody Molloy, former assistant director general Gerry Pyke, former public affairs manager Sean Connolly, former science challenge programme manager John Cahill and former corporate affairs director Greg Craig.

The identity of the sixth credit card holder has yet to be disclosed.

Almost a third of the credit card spending — €251,693 — was on domestic restaurants and hotels.

A further €241,203 was on foreign hotels, with another €100,047 on foreign travel. Foreign restaurants accounted for €31,856.

FAS board expenses charged to the credit cards came to €49,352. Books and research material cost €21,155 and motor expenses came to €4,705.

Of the remainder, €78,770 was classified as “other expenditure” and €32,416 was “miscellaneous”.
