Lithuanian Teacher Fired For Developing Top-Grade Students Using ‘Forbidden’ Books

Lithuanian Teachers, unhappy with the quality of modern school textbooks, recommend that students draw knowledge from books of the Soviet era.

Modern textbooks of the Baltic States do not satisfy 'knowledge hungry' students of Russian schools

Bureaucrats from the Ministry of Science and Education sacked a mathematics teacher from Visaginas (Lithuania) after discovering they were using a ‘prohibited’ method of training.
It turns out the mathematics teacher wanted to give students solid knowledge, and used mathematical textbooks and assignments from the Soviet years, sending these to students via e-mail.
After such training, several students were winners of Mathematical Olympiads by a large margin. The committee members were surprised how easily the participants solved the problems in a different way and asked how they had learned.
As a result, schools in the city were raided. They found that children had “forbidden” books to learn history and geography.
“Now how do we teach children real history? What we have now – to put it mildly, is not true history. We are trying to broaden the horizons of students with the help of Soviet and Russian issued textbooks, but now we must do it secretly,” – complained one teacher in conversation with a reporter Nijole Stabingite.
According to them, textbooks, translated from Lithuanian to Russian are woefully unsuited. Despite this, the representative of the Ministry, Aida Yanonite, argued that the list of textbooks for Russian schools was approved and endorsed “with the participation of teachers in all schools.”
According to Yanonite, “all must learn from them and not reinvent the wheel”. The Russian community of Visaginas is also concerned about the level of knowledge available to their children, who study terms and reference works which are alien to them. They are especially concerned about the introduction of multi-choice exams which they see as an attempt to “dumb down” students.
