Irishman held in Israel ‘threatened by top official close to PM’

The Donegal man detained in Israel after its commandos shot dead nine people on a flotilla of ships heading for Gaza has told the UN that he received a “serious threat” from an official close to the Israeli Prime Minister.

Fiachra O Luain from Carndonagh was second mate on the Challenger 1 and watched in horror as Israeli forces descended on the Mavi Marmara and opened fire.

The 28-year-old, who went to secondary school in Derry, said he had yet to decide whether he would return on the next aid convoy in October.

This week Mr O Luain submitted his statement of evidence to the United Nations Secretary General’s Panel Of Inquiry.

In his statement, he reveals how before the raid he alerted Senator John Kerry’s office in the US and the Irish Department for Foreign Affairs to a “serious threat” he received in an email from an official close to Binyamin Netanyahu — the same official with whom he had celebrated the Passover.

Their relationship deteriorated when the official learned Mr O Luain was on the flotilla.

In his evidence he said: “He wrote: ‘Details have been sent to the Foreign Ministry… May you and your boat sink to the depths of the sea, may you know the punishment meted out to the enemies of God’s Chosen People’. Knowing how close this man was to the Israeli Prime Minister, I realised how serious this threat was.”

Irish ministers fight EU bid to give Israel data

The Republic of Ireland is to vote today against an EU plan to allow sensitive personal data on European citizens to be handed over to Israel.

A crucial meeting to determine whether the plan should go ahead is taking place in Brussels.

A special European Commission committee was forced to call the meeting after Justice Minister Dermot Ahern blocked a bid to push through the plan “on the nod” without consultation with government ministers from EU states.

The commission is comprised of officials from the 27 member states and Ireland will be represented today by a senior official from the Department of Justice.

Before yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, Mr Ahern met Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin to discuss the Brussels talks and the two men agreed that Ireland should push for a vote by the committee and then oppose the plan.

The committee wants to include Israel on a list of ‘third’ countries that are already deemed to have adequate data protection safeguards to allow them receive personal data on European citizens.

The list already includes countries like the US, Switzerland, Canada, Argentina, the Isle of Man and Guernsey.

The Republic will today ask the committee to explain if steps were taken to establish what data protection safeguards were in place in Israel, whether the data protection commissioner there was independent of the Israeli government, and if any enquiries were made about the use of Irish and other EU passports by Israelis agents, blamed for the murder of Hamas activist, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, in a hotel in Dubai.

Ahern may look at higher ATM fees after €300,000 robbery and kidnap

IRISH BANKS may need to impose much larger ATM fees on their customers if the number of bank robberies involving hostage taking is to be reduced, Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern has said.

He was speaking yesterday in the wake of the kidnapping of a bank manager’s wife, who was held hostage by an armed gang until her husband handed over €300,000 from the AIB branch where he works.

Mr Ahern said while the banks, bank workers and the gardaí had gone to considerable lengths to reduce such robberies, known as “tiger raids”, it was now time to examine if the amount of cash in circulation in Ireland should be reduced. Imposing higher fees for ATM transactions might discourage a dependence on cash and in turn reduce the amount of cash held by banks that could be targeted by organised crime gangs.

“This is something that I did raise with the heads of the banks, and something I suppose as a nation that we have to come to terms with; that we’re not as cashless a society as most of our European colleagues,” Mr Ahern said.

“If you go to other countries in Europe you’ll find that there is less cash swilling about the place than there is here in Ireland, in proportion.”

Irish banks already impose relatively small charges for some ATM transactions but charges per transaction are higher in some other jurisdictions.

Fine Gael’s spokesman for social protection Michael Ring TD said it was “disgraceful” that Mr Ahern was using the latest tiger raid as a means of mooting higher bank charges.

“Minister Ahern has some cheek to fly a kite on a proposed charge for the use of ATMs just hours after yet another bank official and his wife have been put through hell by heartless criminals.”

Mr Ring said most cash in bank branches was stored there for use by the banks’ commercial customers and not private customers who use ATMs. Read more…

Afghan civilian casualties increase under Petraeus

United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is flying to Afghanistan to meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai to discuss a NATO airstrike that killed 10 civilians.

Karzai is reportedly outraged over the incident in a region that had previously been peaceful. The airstrike is leading many to question whether or not General David Petraeus is changing the rules of engagement in order to win in Afghan.

Under General Stanley McChrystal the rules of engagement were very strict to ensure a lower number of civilian casualties. The primary reason behind the strict rules was to win over the hearts and minds of the Afghan people.

Jake Diliberto of Rethink Afghanistan argued that under Petraeus there will likely be a large increase in violence, similar to the increase of violence during the troop surge Petraeus orchestrated in Iraq.

“When General Petraeus took over during the surge in Iraq starting in 2006 violence increased, it did not decrease and it maintained increasing violence until sometime in late 2007-early 2008,” said Diliberto.

He argued that unlike Iraq, the people of Afghanistan are not ready to address a peace settlement. He said the people are too separated to begin coming together any time soon. Read more…

Drug shootout with army kills 25 in Mexico

 

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – At least 25 suspected drug gang members were killed in an army raid in rural northeastern Mexico on Thursday, the army said in a press release.

Soldiers were sent to the location after an airborne patrol sighted armed men outside a building. Fighting began when the men opened fire on the troops.

Three people who presumably had been kidnapped by the gang were freed following the fighting. Two soldiers were wounded.

Troops seized 23 vehicles, including two painted in army colors, two dozen guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

The clash was originally reported to have taken place in the state of Nuevo Leon, where business hub Monterrey is located, but actually took place across the border in neighboring Tamaulipas.

Tamaulipas state has become one of Mexico’s bloodiest drug flashpoints since the start of the year as rival hitmen from the Gulf cartel and its former armed wing, the Zetas, fight over smuggling routes into the United States.

Mexican marines found the bodies of 72 Central and South American migrants gunned down by suspected drug cartel hitmen last week in Tamaulipas in one of the worst mass killings in recent Mexican history.

Gangster linked to Geurin case awaiting extradition

A gangster who fled Ireland after journalist Veronica Guerin’s murder is facing extradition from Holland to the UK, it was revealed today.

Wanted fraudster John Traynor, known as The Coach, was arrested by Dutch police last Monday night after 18 years on the run from a British prison.

The 62-year-old – named in court by underworld associate and drug trafficker John Gilligan as the man who ordered Guerin’s 1996 killing – is believed to have been in Holland for several years.

He was detained in the Amstelveen area following a joint operation by the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (Soca) and Dutch authorities.

Traynor vanished in November 1992 when he failed to return to HMP Prison Highpoint, Suffolk, after a short period of home leave. Since then it is understood he has spent time in Spain and Portugal.

“He is now awaiting extradition to the UK to serve the remainder of his sentence,” a Soca spokesman said.

“This arrest is as a result of ongoing collaboration with the Dutch authorities that Soca has to apprehend criminals operating in the Netherlands that impact on the UK.”

Traynor was arrested on August 23 and it is expected he will appear in court in the coming days.

He was an underworld contact of Guerin as she exposed organised crime in Dublin in the mid-1990s.

Health fear over metal in formula milk as researchers discover up to 40 times more aluminium than breast milk

Formula baby milk can contain 40 times more aluminium than breast milk, potentially causing health problems in later life, claim researchers.

Traces of the metal in milk from some of the UK’s leading products were found to be much higher than is legally allowed in water, according to scientists.

One formula made by Cow & Gate – specifically marketed for premature babies – had the highest level of all, with more than 800 micrograms per litre.

European law states water can contain no more than 200 micrograms of aluminium per litre. Chemist Dr Chris Exley, who led the study at Keele University, Staffordshire, said: ‘We’ve known about the high aluminium content in infant formula for many years and there is evidence to show it is potentially quite dangerous.

‘It has been linked to neurological diseases and bone defects in later life and there are even links with dementia.

‘Everyone has aluminium in their bodies but infants are especially prone to absorbing it and are not so good at getting rid of it.’ Read more…

Pierre Milza, an expert on fascist Italy, theorizes that the wartime prime minister may have wanted Mussolini dead to prevent the letters, in which Churchill expressed his admiration for his Italian counterpart before the outbreak of the Second World War, coming to light.

“There is no doubt, judging by his public declarations back in the 1920s and early 1930s, that Churchill was a fan of Mussolini. Roosevelt too,” Mr Milza said.

“Churchill even once said: ‘Fascism has rendered a service to the entire world… If I were Italian, I am sure I would have been with you entirely’.

“But that was understandable in 1927, as then a fascist did not mean a friend of Hitler and accomplice to genocide. But when you are head of state and legitimate war hero of the British people, you don’t really want all that put up in lights.”

Officially, Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci, were seized by Italian Communist partisans near Dongo on Lake Como as they tried to flee to Switzerland in April 1945.

Despite disguising himself as a drunk German officer in a mixed Italian and SS convoy, he was spotted. Both he and Petacci were shot and their bodies subsequently trussed up upside in a square in Milan the following day.

Writing in his book, The Last Days of Mussolini, Mr Milza says that this may explain why Churchill chose to holiday under a false name only a few miles from the spot Mussolini was seized. Read more…

Vermilion 380 oil rig leaking after Gulf blast; mile-long sheen spotted on water: Coast Guard

Oil appeared to be leaking into the snakebit Gulf of Mexico from a rig that exploded Thursday and hurled a dozen workers into the drink.

The disturbing report from the Coast Guard came less than an hour after the owners of the damaged rig insisted that the crude was contained and posed no danger to the Gulf.

The mile-long oil sheen was about 100 feet wide and was spreading from the still burning platform, which is located west of where a BP rig explosion caused the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

Mariner Energy, the Houston-based owner of the platform, has dispatched three firefighting vessels to the site some 80 miles south of the Louisiana coast and one was already battling the blaze, the feds said.

Earlier, a company spokesman tried to damp down fears that a region in recovery might have a relapse due to a fresh outbreak of oil pollution.

“In an initial flyover by company personnel over the site, there was no hydrocarbon spill that was reported,” Patrick Cassidy said. “Everything appears to be contained.”

Cassidy said the blast and subsequent fire “occurred away from the well.”

“It wasn’t involved in the area where they had oil producing wells,” he said. Read more…

Simon Wiesenthal: Israeli spy!

JERUSALEM — Simon Wiesenthal, a Holocaust survivor who gained worldwide fame for decades as a one-man Nazi-hunting operation, was in fact frequently on the payroll of the Mossad, Israel’s spy agency, a new biography asserts.

The assertion, based on numerous documents and interviews with three people said to be Mr. Wiesenthal’s Mossad handlers, punctures not only a widely held belief about how he operated; it also suggests a need to re-evaluate the standard view that the Israeli government took no interest in tracking down Nazis until the 1960 capture in Argentina of Adolf Eichmann, and little thereafter.

Mr. Wiesenthal died in 2005 at the age of 96 in his Vienna home.

“This requires us to adjust in some small way our view of history,” said Tom Segev, the author of the new book “Simon Wiesenthal: The Life and Legends,” which is being published by Doubleday this week in the United States and simultaneously in six other countries.

Mr. Segev, who is Israeli and a columnist for the newspaper Haaretz here, is the author of half a dozen other books, mostly about Israeli history. In a telephone interview, he said he had been given unfettered access to Mr. Wiesenthal’s papers — some 300,000 of them, previously closed to the public — by Mr. Wiesenthal’s daughter, Paulinka Kreisberg.

While reading through Mr. Wiesenthal’s correspondence, Mr. Segev came across names of people he did not recognize and discovered that they were Mossad agents and handlers. He interviewed three of them and named two in the book. Read more…

Following a visit yesterday to some young prisoners being held at the Megiddo Prison, lawyers for the Ministry of Detainees have stated that the young prisoners testified under oath that they had been interrogated and systematically electrocuted and tortured by Israeli intelligence officers in settlements near to Palestinian cities.

According to Salim Redouane who was arrested near Qalqilya on 08.05.2010, he was kept in a camp near Tzofin for 3 hours before being transferred to the settlement of Ariel where he was questioned by Shin Bet interrogators. His head was repeatedly hit against the prison room wall in an effort to get him to confess and he was beaten severely. The investigators threatened to burn his skin if he did not confess to the accusations against him.

Another detainee, Mohamed Ali Radwan, informed the lawyers that he was arrested at his home in Qalqilya Azzun on 3/8/2010 and one of the soldiers forced him to take off his shirt in order to use it as a blindfold. He was handcuffed and then taken somewhere near the village where he was told to hand in what was in his possession before he was hit in the back with a rifle butt and kicked repeatedly in the stomach and on the back. One of the soldiers then dragged him across the ground which resulted in deep wounds on his hands and he was taken to the Ariel settlement where he was questioned for several hours and was hit on the head, in the face and all over his the body.

According to the testimony of Yahya Ali Abdel-Hafez, born 03.07.1995 and a resident of the Qalqilya Governorate of Azzoun, he was arrested on 05.08.2010 near the city of Qalqilya and taken to a camp near Tzofin where he was kept for 3 hours before being transferred to the settlement of Ariel and interrogated. During the interrogation, he did not recognize some of the charges against him and so he was beaten in the face several times and repeatedly electrocuted. Under duress, Yahya eventually signed the statement to avoid further torture.

Lawyers also visited Abdul Hamid Abdul Latif Sa’id Abu Haniyeh who is currently in year 10 and was born on 12/11/1994. A resident of Azzun, he was arrested on 05.08.2010 near Qalqilya, where was also taken to the Ariel settlement and interrogated by Shin Bet interrogators. He was beaten up severely before being hit hard by a large jolt of electricity. A terrified Abdul Hamid who thought he would be imprisoned at the Megiddo prison along with his brothers, signed the statement he was given.

Lawyers for the Ministry of Prisoners also visited Ahmed Hussein Mustafa who was born on 10/01/1994 and is from Jalazoun, north of Ramallah. He was arrested from his home at three in the morning on 11.02.2010 and was beaten up inside his house before being taken to the Beit El settlement. Ahmed remained in the settlement until daybreak when he was transferred to Benjamin where he was fined 2000 NIS and sentenced to 20 months in detention. His two brothers were detained in the Negev prison.

James Lee is Al Gore is Prince Charles is the Unabomber

Al Gore’s Church of Climatism has claimed a new glorious martyr. His name is James Lee – the Discovery channel attempted eco-suicide-bomber – and if he’d had his way he wouldn’t have been the only one who ended up in the great recycling bin in the sky. That’s because, as far as the late James Lee was concerned, humans like the innocent Discovery channel employees he held hostage are the scum of the earth.

Just read some of the manifesto he posted on the internet and see for yourself:

The humans? The planet does not need humans.

You MUST KNOW the human population is behind all the pollution and problems in the world, and YET you encourage the exact opposite instead of discouraging human growth and procreation. Surely you MUST ALREADY KNOW this!

Does this sound like the ravings of a sad, deranged loner on the wilder fringes of eco-fascist lunacy? Not to me it doesn’t. Strip away the block capitals and what you have, word for word, is the core manifesto of the entire global green movement.

Some greens, such as Al Gore, the Prince of Wales, the Hon Sir Jonathon Porritt or that nice David Attenborough try to express their philosophy more diplomatically. Others, such as James Lee and his kindred spirit the Unabomber, are more forthright. Ideologically, however, there is not a cigarette paper’s difference between them. All cleave to the same fundamental tenet of the Church of Climatism: that humans are the problem not the solution.

It was for just this same strain of dodgy thinking that I castigated Boris Johnson yesterday. And the fact that people like Boris express their concerns about “overpopulation” jovially doesn’t make their stance any less reprehensible. In fact it probably makes it more so. At least with the Unabomber or James Lee you know that you’re dealing with a nutcase. But when an apparently reasonable, decent, pukka fellow like Boris or the Hon Sir Jonathon Porritt or the Prince of Wales or that nice David Attenborough off the TV expresses a similar opinion, there’s a strong risk that what is au fond exactly the kind of poisonous, misanthropy the Nazis took to its logical extreme begins to look moderate and sensible and considered.

What’s really depressing is that the philosophy expressed in James Lee’s (and the Unabomber’s) manifesto – which is also, incidentally, the philosophy expressed in Al Gore’s The Earth In Balance – is also the philosophy that is taught every day to our children in their schools: the world is fragile; human beings are a blot on the landscape; through our greed and selfishness we make everything worse; really it would be better if we vanished altogether and let all the lovely pure noble animals take over.

Saving the environment and the remaning species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.

Not only do our schools teach our children this misanthropic – and deeply ahistoric – rot, but so also do broadcasters like the Discovery Channel. Their sister station, Animal Planet, for example, broadcasts a series called Whale Wars celebrating the real-life adventures of animal rights extremist Paul Watson. (H/T: MSher)

It’s time we woke up to the threat posed by this mass brainwashing of the younger generation. We worry, rightly, about those Muslim children who are being indoctrinated with the extreme Wahaabist version of their faith. Yet we seem astonishingly complacent that every day, in schools of every kind throughout the Western world, our children are being taught by well-meaning teachers to view their world and culture through exactly the same anti-capitalist, anti-human, anti-growth eyes as James Lee and the Unabomber.

The modern environmental movement is not kind, caring or gentle. It is a series of ticking time bombs waiting to blow up in our face.

Did NIST Edit WTC 7 Footage To Hide Evidence Of Implosion?

After filing a lawsuit that prompted NIST to release more than 3 terabytes of photographs and videos from their investigation into the collapse of the twin towers and WTC 7 on 9/11, the International Center for 9/11 Studies has obtained evidence that suggests NIST edited several videos of the collapse of Building 7 in order to hide evidence of a controlled implosion.

The Center filed a FOIA Request with NIST on January 26, 2009, seeking production of “all of the photographs and videos collected, reviewed, cited or in any other way used by NIST during its investigation of the World Trade Center building collapses.” Following several unsuccessful attempts to get NIST to even acknowledge receipt of the Request, the Center was forced to file a lawsuit on May 28, 2009. Shortly after the lawsuit was filed, the Request was assigned a reference number, and NIST began periodically releasing batches of responsive records.

The Center has now begun posting some of those images and videos online, the first batch of which is from an external hard disk drive “NIST WTC Investigation Cumulus Video Clips.”

In one of the clips, the video of which has been in the public domain for years, a loud, low-frequency boom can be heard just before the east penthouse of WTC 7 falls. Once the support columns that held up the penthouse are taken out, the rest of the building falls almost within its own footprint.

However, in subsequent clips released by NIST, where the camera is located nearer to the building, the collapse of the penthouse is clearly edited out of the footage.

“Several clips from the Cumulus database show signs of editing. In the two video clips below, the collapse of the penthouse of World Trade Center 7 is cut out of the video. These videos happen to have been filmed from close to WTC 7, and have a high quality soundtrack that would have picked up explosion sounds from the charges that severed the columns supporting the penthouse, especially the explosion heard in the last video clip presented,” comments the International Center for 9/11 Studies.

In another clip, the entire collapse of the building is edited out, the audio is removed and only restored after the building has fully collapsed.

The Center also obtained videos of the collapse of the twin towers that had obviously been edited, with sections deliberately removed. “There are many video clips in the Cumulus database that do not show collapse initiation – the only event even purportedly explained in the final report from NIST on the Twin Towers,” states the Center.

Another new video shows Michael Hess yelling for help from the 8th floor window of WTC 7. The clip reinforces the fact that the building had not sustained any substantial damage before its free fall collapse within 7 seconds.

As we documented for several years, the collapse of WTC 7 is the smoking gun confirming that the official story behind 9/11 is bogus. The collapse of Building 7 was reported before it happened by several news stations, including BBC and CNN.

The International Center for 9/11 Studies is now in the process of reviewing over 300 DVDs along with several external hard disk drives that contain a plethora of unseen photographs and video footage from ground zero. Judging by the small amount of damning footage already released, it’s highly probable that this data will provide a myriad of new contradictions both to the official 9/11 story as well as NIST’s own investigation into the collapse of the three buildings.

THE war in Afghanistan is an unwinnable quagmire and poor US intelligence is leading to the deaths of Australian soldiers, a visiting former CIA officer says.

Robert Baer, a decorated CIA field officer of two decades experience who had spent years in the Middle East, said any chances the US and its allies had of defeating the Taliban in Afghanistan had already been squandered. The Coalition was fighting an unwinnable war, he said, and this was the case because victory required reliable intelligence.

”[US intelligence agencies] have the same problem they had before 9/11. It is a system that doesn’t work.”

That system sees CIA operatives and allied intelligence officers unable to gather reliable information because security concerns do not allow them to travel widely. And most do not speak the local language. ”They’re all stuck behind the wire; they don’t get out … it’s like the crusades where you’re stuck on your castle imagining what the natives are doing,” he said.

Describing Washington DC as a ”blank spot on the map”, he said that despite the massive growth of the intelligence agencies post September 11, 2001, there remained systemic failings.

”American intelligence after 9/11 has been unable to co-ordinate … the FBI will not share with the CIA. CIA has operational databases which they won’t share with even others inside the CIA.”

All of this led to a dysfunctional intelligence community unable to provide reliable, contemporary intelligence that could allow the Coalition to win in Afghanistan.

”Twenty-two American soldiers have been killed since Friday, and Australia has lost 21 men … Afghanistan is a quagmire and it can only be fought with an effective counter-insurgency. It cannot be fought with Abrams tanks and F16s,” he said. Read more…

Well of course the EU-capitulating Foreign Secretary William Hague has had to deny rumours about his alleged relationship with his new aide, 25-year old Chris Myers. If a Cabinet Minister pushing 50 is still walking around the streets dressed like this with a young man-friend, he is just inviting (totally unfounded) speculation.

So I offer a few examples of other couples of man-friends whose style might be a template for Hague and Myers. A change of style could erase all doubt they are as butch as anyone.

The first is a couple of German officers relaxing together near Stalingrad. How undeniably heterosexual do they look?

Next, one of the great masculine couples of history, the Lone Ranger and Tonto.

And finally the ultimate butch twosome in any society, a couple of firemen, These from the 1870s, the kind of conservative period that ought to suit a pair of Tories such as Hague and Myers.

Of course, the truth about “global warming” has been reported for decades by alternative media sources such as Infowars.com (click here to search the archive).  GlobalResearch.ca recently published an article, Global Warming and CO2 Emmissions, in which Jorge Figueiredo, outlines certain established facts about global warming.  The list of alternative media sources, books and articles exposing the hoax is endless.

The current debate revolves around an investigation by the InterAcademy Council (IAC), a consortium of national scientific academies, which has released documents exposing the numerous errors contained within United Nations’ reports on climate change.

The Wall Street Journal article, Probe Seeks Climate-Panel Changes,  reported  that a group investigating the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will recommend in a report Monday that the scientific organization  beef up its capacity to ferret out errors in its scientific assessment..

Fox News presented an expose’ on the topic entitled, The Green $windle. Fox News launched its attacks on Global Warming years ago in an effort to discredit politicians on the “Left”.  Surprisingly, the latest  report admits that the real purpose of the “global warming hoax”  is to establish a global dictatorship via a “global carbon tax” and “cap and trade” regulation.

Well, it certainly appears that the United Nations’ request for the IAC investigation is an admission of the IPCC’s fraudulent attempt to impose carbon regulations world wide.  The United Nations has apparently realized that “We The People” are not buying what they have been trying to sell.

We can look forward to the UN changing the strategy for the establishment of a “global scientific dictatorship” by repackaging the “climate change” agenda.

Manama: Bahrain’s authorities charged an opposition activist with seeking to overthrow the government, his lawyer said.

Abdul Jalil Al Singace, the head of the human rights section of the opposition Haq movement, potentially faces the death penalty, lawyer Mohammad Al Tajer said by telephone from the capital, Manama.

He was arrested on August 13 as he flew back to Bahrain from London.

Bahrain, home to the US Fifth Fleet, has faced riots since authorities rounded up scores of Shiite opposition activists in a series of arrests that began in mid-August.

The government says the detainees had been planning to carry out acts of terrorism and violence, while Bahraini human rights groups have described the arrests as a crackdown aimed at cementing control before October parliamentary elections.

Prisoners of conscience

Al Singace had been in London to testify about the human rights situation in Bahrain to a meeting at the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the UK parliament.

The number of arrests has now reached about 230, said Al Tajer. Three other Shiite activists, whom he is representing face the same charges as Al Singace, he said.

Many among Bahrain’s poor, mostly Shiite communities retain family and cultural ties to Iran.

London-based Amnesty International criticised the arrests in an August 18 statement that said the activists may be “prisoners of conscience”.

CIA in Honduras: the Practice of Selective Terror

President of Honduras Manuel Zelaya was displaced slightly over a year ago in a coup staged by the local oligarchy and the US intelligence community. The coup came as a punishment for Zelaya’s alignment with H. Chavez and other populist Latin American leaders. Since the time, the news flow from Honduras abounds with stories of political assassinations, the victims being activists of trade unions, peasant and student organizations, and the National Popular Resistance Front opposing the pro-US regime of Porfirio Lobo. Ten journalists who expressed support for the ousted Honduran president have been killed this year alone.

The most recent case of the type was the murder of Israel Zelaya, 56, who was kidnapped by an armed group which easily crossed by car numerous police checkpoints set up as a part of the security-tightening campaign. The journalist was taken to a secluded location, tortured, and shot two times in the head and once – in the chest.

Dozens of similar incidents show that a program of ”political cleansing” is underway in Honduras. Killers selectively target potential leaders capable of galvanizing protesters. Peasant leader Maria Teresa Flores, 50, was the coordinator of the Council of Peasant Organizations of Honduras and a proponent of an agrarian reform including the abolition of latifundias and the establishment of rural cooperatives. She was kidnapped, and a week later her bullet-ridden body with numerous traces of machete strikes and one hand cut off was found by the roadside in the Comayagua department.

Only a fraction of the cases of political assassinations in Honduras become widely known. The operations are carried out in secrecy by specially trained and lavishly paid death squads staffed by police agents, bandits, and professional killers of Honduran origin or brought in from Columbia. These days, mass graves of opponents of the current regime are discovered in Honduras increasingly often. It is an established pattern that political murders become widespread wherever the US “helps restore democracy”. Berta Oliva, president of the Committee of Relatives of the Detained and Disappeared of Honduras, told the media a few days ago about the discovery of another mass grave with the bodies of over 100 people reported missing in June-August, that is, after the coup that propelled P. Lobo to power.

Leader of the National Front of Popular Resistance (FNRP) Carlos H. Reyes charges that the decisions to kill opposition leaders are made at the top level of the Honduran administration with direct involvement of key US Embassy officers. It is no overstatement considering that preemptive terror implemented by the state is a practice openly endorsed by Washington. Invoking cases of assassinations of foes of the US in Asia and Africa, The New York Times maintained on August 15 that the geography and scale of the CIA secret wars “against terrorists” expanded under B. Obama compared to what the agency was allowed to do under G. Bush. The article contained no mentioning of the assassinations in Latin America, but it is an open secret that CIA operations targeting the regimes unfriendly to the US in Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and Ecuador are at full swing. Serious efforts are being made to strengthen the subversive terrorist networks in the above countries where agents are receiving intense on-site training.

Fighting against the Central American insurgencies and guerrilla groups in the 1960′s – 1980′s, the Pentagon and the US intelligence community developed efficient approaches of the “struggle against terror”. Priority used to be given to decapitating the groups and neutralizing their support bases. In that epoch, peasants and Indians were routinely intimidated, forced to flee or even killed en masse in the regions of heightened guerrilla activity. The methods were later borrowed by the Columbian army and applied under the guidance of US advisers in the country’s internal conflict to undermine the potentials of FARC and ELN. So far there are no guerrilla groups in Honduras, and the Honduran administration noiselessly relies on the omnipresent death squads – which act under the US Embassy staff’s supervision – to bleed the opposition.

The bloated US mission in Tegucigalpa functions as a de facto parallel Honduran government, largely overshadowing the official one. US ambassador Hugo Llorens appointed under G. Bush is artistically playing the role of an honest diplomat totally uninvolved in the coup that led to the ouster of the legitimate president of Honduras. Llorens can count on Lobo’s understanding as the new Honduran president is highly receptive to Washington’s initiatives and readily distances himself from the Latin American populist regimes. And, of course, Lobo rejects the ALBA integration project and H. Chavez’s “XXI century socialism” and – for Washington’s peace of mind – even shies away from discount energy deals with Venezuela, the resulting damage suffered by the Honduran economy notwithstanding.

US military diplomats - Defense Attaché  Colonel Robert W. Swisher, Special Tactics Group commander Colonel Kenneth F. Rodriguez, Palmerola Airbase liaison officer Steve Argenthal, and others – are known to contribute a lot to the governance in Honduras. Several dozens of US military intelligence officers are spying on the Honduran National Popular Resistance Front jointly with other US intelligence community staff operating under the cover of the US Embassy, the Peace Corps, DEA, etc. The CIA station in Honduras headed by US Embassy political counselor  Silvia Eiriz is at the helm of the activity.

There are obvious reasons behind Washington’s involvement in the Honduran crisis. Toppling Zelaya stopped the drift of Honduras towards a strategic alliance with the Latin American populist regimes, but the intensifying resistance mounted by the supporters of the ousted president is likely to confront Lobo’s administration with serious problems. Zelaya’s Patriotic Alternative and the threat of nation-wide strikes highlight the ineptitude of the current Honduran government.

For Washington, the return of Zelaya would mean a new headache. Secretary General of the Organization of American States Jose Miguel Insulza hopes to see Zelaya reinstated to prevent the emergence of a precedent allowing rightists to throw a legitimate president out of his own country. Zelaya is doing what he can to stage a comeback: he submits appeals to Honduran media nearly on a daily basis calling for unity of protesters and disproving the allegations leveled at him by the US media.

At the moment the official and the shadow administrations of Honduras are bombarding Zelaya with charges. Allegedly, he misappropriated millions of dollars handed out to Honduras by Venezuela as economic aid. There is no clarity what happened to his personal presidential Lexus and to portions of the budget of his administration. Zelaya is aware that in the case of his return to Honduras he will have to defend himself in court.

The surge of terror in Honduras is also a factor Zelaya has to reckon with. He is the number one target for the death squads, and threats are relayed to him via various channels that going back home would be a major risk.

At present Zelaya has the guest status in the Dominican Republic. For Washington, the optimal scenario would be Zelaya’s consent to stay where he is – at the fancy La Romana resort frequented by millionaires and pop idols. Zelaya does not give in, though, keeps in touch with the populist leaders, and ignores Washington’s displeasure. With Chavez’s help, Zelaya became the Petrocaribe coordinator responsible for safeguarding independence and democracy. Holding the post makes it easier for him to travel around the region and to promote the National Popular Resistance Front.

CIA agents in the Dominican Republic are watching Zelaya day and night, sending reports with details of his meetings, phone calls, and e-mails to Langley. The US Embassy’s political section – A. Margulis, T. Fitzgibbons, and A. Norman – put collecting information about Zelaya and about his contacts with Chavez high on their agenda. Zelaya is surrounded by CIA agents and sophisticated surveillance systems, and the Dominican police readily shares information with the US. Chief of Dominican police Gen. R.G. Gusman is regarded by the CIA as a partner and enjoys the agency’s sponsorship. In a couple of decades, journalists will probably unearth facts about the CIA personal donations to Gen. Gusman. Some findings are already in the media: the police will get $3m to fight drug trafficking and other types of crime plus $250,000 to buy computers and various equipment.

The CIA would readily dispense with even greater sums of money to make sure Zelaya is debarred from Honduras. The US double standards in countering terrorism are common knowledge, and for Washington wars and provocations are acceptable instruments in political games. Chances are Zelaya has already got a Black Spot from the CIA and a team of cleaners is waiting for the moment…

EU seeking more French explanations after Roma crackdown

The European Commission’s top justice official is seeking extra explanation from France on its policy towards Roma before pronouncing on the expulsions under way, an EU official said Wednesday.

Commissioner Viviane Reding said in report presented Wednesday that “the commission is waiting for detailed information from France,” the official who had seen the document told AFP.

The “clinically neutral” report recalled European Union rules on the freedom of movement and freedom of establishment, said the official on condition of anonymity.

Article 21 of the Treaty of Rome says that all EU citizens have the right to move and establish themselves in any of the 27 member states.

However restrictions may be imposed in the name of “public order, public security or public health”.

Reding’s report also reproduces her statement on August 25 when she expressed “some concern” about the French policy towards the Roma Gypsies, the official said. Read more…

Dozens killed in Pakistan explosions

Multiple bomb explosions at a Shia Muslim gathering in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore have left at least 28 people dead and 200 others wounded.

Three bombs went off in quick succession during a crowded mourning procession in the Karbla Game Shah area of Lahore on Wednesday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The Shia Muslims were marking the martyrdom of the first Shia Imam, Ali Ibn-Abi Taleb (PBUH).

Medics say the death toll is expected to rise as some of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

Despite being considered a stable and peaceful city, Lahore has seen several bomb attacks over the past couple of years.

Pro-Taliban groups have launched a violent campaign against the Shia Muslims, and are stretching the campaign toward the so-called stable areas of Pakistan as well.

Several Shia religious gatherings have been targeted in central province of Punjab over the past few months.

Since the 1980s, thousands of people have been killed in sectarian-related incidents in Pakistan.

Israel pledges to resume construction in West Bank

Israeli settlers have stated that they will resume construction works in the Palestinian Autonomy. This comes after four Israelis were killed when gunmen attacked a car near the city of Hebron.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the attack. He is now in Washington along with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for direct talks starting on Thursday.

A freeze on Israeli settlements is one of the main issues on the table. Abdel Bari Atwan, editor of the London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper, is not ambivalent on the issue: the renewed construction automatically puts an end to the talks.

“If the construction resumes in the West Bank settlement, this could be the end of direct talks between Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,” the journalist said. “The deal is very clear. These lands are supposed to go back to the Palestinian Authority, to be part of the independent Palestinian state. If the Israelis continue grabbing lands, obviously Abbas will say, ‘Why should I talk to you?’”

Hamas leaders are not taking part in the negotiations. Yet their actions, even though they have been condemned by the Palestinian government, are still a threat to the peace process.

“Maybe when Hamas carried out these attacks against the Israeli settlements and killing four people near Hebron they wanted to send a message to the Israelis – we have an upper hand here, we can reach our targets and derail the peace process, we can provoke the Israelis for a reaction.”

Hamas government spokesman Taher Al-Nono does not call their attack on the Hebron neighborhood a provocation, but confirms that it is a response to overall Israeli policy.

“We think that Israel is responsible for this incident – for killing any Israeli in the West Bank or in any other territory,” said Al-Nono. Hamas’ stance does not imply any consensus: “There is no choice for Israelis – just to leave.”

As for the peace talks, Hamas does not see any sense in them because these are “negotiations for the sake of negotiations, not for the sake of agreement.”

Shaul Goldstein, mayor of the Gush Etzion regional council, is also pessimistic about the outcome of the talks. According to him, the human rights of Israelis have been constantly violated and he does not see any willingness on the Palestinian side to change the situation.

“I can buy land in Moscow and build a house, I can buy land in New York and build a house – but I can’t buy land in Samaria, which is the cradle of my people, and build a house there,” he said. “You want to transfer the area to another government? Go ahead, this is democracy, but what’s the problem for me to buy a property and build a house?”
