This is Christopher Monckton.

They’re at it again.

The United Nations, having abjectly failed at Copenhagen in December of
2009 to impose upon the world a totally unnecessary, wickedly expensive,
democracy-destroying world government treaty, it has now decided to hold
an emergency meeting of states, party to the United Nations Framework
Convention in Bonn and there, seven months before the next Cancun round,
they’re going to try to stitch together a deal to take democracy and
freedom and prosperity away, worldwide, forever and, to make themselves
very, very rich. And to make you who are watching this video, very, very
poor.

Now why is this a bad idea?

First of all, government of the people, by the people, and for the
people is a rare and precious thing. Very few countries around the world
have it.

The United States in particular, has it, and has it very strongly. And
if you carelessly transfer the powers of the government whom you elect
to a world government that no-one will elect, and give that government
supreme powers of taxation, of economic intervention, of environmental
intervention, over the heads of your elected representatives in your
country, then you will carelessly have thrown your democracy and your
freedom away.

And you will have done so in the name of saving the planet from a threat
which does not, in fact, exist.

So what are these representatives going to do?

They’re going to meet and discuss how to take your freedom away.

What could you do about it?

You should telephone them. That’s the way to do it best. That’s what
gets noticed.

Telephone your elected representative. If you’re in the United States,
you telephone your senators; there are two of them for each state.

Telephone them, in Washington. Try to speak to the Senator himself, or
to a senior staffer. Do not be fobbed off with a secretary, or an
intern, or receptionist, or telephonist.

Get through to a staffer or to a senator – say there is no need for any
climate treaty, and you, in the Senate, must understand that and must
not pass any climate treaty.

Get on that telephone.

OK, you may have done it before. You may have done it just before the
Copenhagen debacle.

Why did Copenhagen fail?

Because so many millions of you did ring your senators, and several of
them got in touch with your President, and your President realised that
the treaty draft that would have set up a world government would not
pass.

And so, that treaty draft was very quietly dropped for a time; but now
they’re back. They’re trying again. They will try in Bonn. They will try
in Cancun. They will try next year in South Africa.

And if they haven’t succeeded by then, they will try at Rio in 2012, the
20th anniversary of the Earth Summit that started all of this nonsense.

But every step of the way, and on every occasion, you must telephone,
telephone your senator and say “this treaty shall not pass”.

Do it now, because it’s your democracy.

Use it or lose it.
You have until the 9th of April to call your democratic representatives.
Don’t wait! Do it now!

Sarkozy irritated by questions over his marriage

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President, has angrily rebuked a journalist for asking about rumours surrounding his marriage to Carla Bruni.

At a joint Downing Street press conference with Gordon Brown, Mr Sarkozy was twice pressed on the recent flurry of speculation that his marriage was in trouble.

He snapped at a French journalist who raised the subject calling his question idiotic.

And minutes later when a British member of the press asked him to deny the rumours the French president simply refused to answer before Mr Brown called the briefing to an end.

Mr Sarkozy’s irritation was plain when he responded to the first question.

He told the journalist: “You must know very little about what the President of the Republic actually has to do all day long. I certainly don’t have time to deal with these ridiculous rumours, not even half a fraction of a second.

“I don’t even know why you use your speaking time to put such an idiotic question.”

He added: “I love Britain – don’t make me bite back those words.”

Mr Brown tried to lighten the mood by offering his own thoughts on the British media.

He told reporters: “As far as the British press, I have been able to tell Nicolas that I don’t believe everything that I read in the British press.”

When the two men turned to leave the Downing Street press conference Mr Sarkozy held his arms out wide as if in exasperation. Mr Brown then placed a consoling arm around the French president whom he considers a friend. Read more…

Nicolas Sarkozy’s private dinner with the Barack and Michelle Obama hailed as ‘diplomatic coup’

AFTER months of being cruelly snubbed, Nicolas Sarkozy’s ambitious dream of supplanting Britain as America’s best friend in Europe has come a step closer to reality with an invitation to a private dinner in the White House at the end of this month.

He and his wife Carla will have dinner with Barack and Michelle Obama in their private White House apartment. It is a rare honour for a visiting leader: Gordon Brown and Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany, had to make do with chats in the Oval Office.

The hyperactive Sarkozy, whose enthusiasm for the glitzy side of politics has led to his being nicknamed “Sarko l’Américain”, is thrilled to be rubbing shoulders with the world’s most famous couple. Even before Obama was elected, the French leader had put his diplomatic service into overdrive to try to win favour with the new White House.

It did not work at first. The pint-sized Sarkozy, embarrassed by photographs of him on tiptoes next to Obama at a summit in France last year, was further humiliated when the American leader — who may be more interested in Asia than Europe — refused an invitation to dinner at the Elysée Palace and took Michelle to a restaurant.

After so much disappointment, the White House dinner on March 30 is being hailed in Paris as a diplomatic coup for Sarkozy, who can barely contain his excitement at the prospect of having “face time” with the American leader. “He’s been waiting for this for an embarrassingly long time,” said a European diplomat, noting that it had been a priority for the French embassy in Washington since before Obama’s election in 2008. “He’s finally got what he wanted.”

Part of Obama’s appeal for Sarkozy is his heroic status in France’s restive immigrant suburbs. But French diplomats insisted that there was more to the meeting than a photo opportunity for a president in need of a bump in his approval ratings. Iran, Afghanistan and the global recession were just some of the topics that would be on the agenda, they said. Nevertheless, there was mockery by French commentators of what one dismissed as a “girls’ summit” in which Michelle and Carla, a former model and folk singer who speaks fluent English, would dominate conversation around the Obama dining room table.

Despite Carla’s best efforts to teach him, Sarkozy speaks little English: he recently greeted Hillary Clinton, the American secretary of state, on the steps of the Elysée with a heavily accented apology for “the bad time” in Paris. He meant to say “weather” — in French the same word means “time” and “weather”.

Financial Warfare Exposed: Soros, Goldman Sachs, Hedge Funds Attack Greece to Smash Euro

It has been evident for some time that the ongoing speculative attack on Greece, along with such other countries as Spain, Ireland, Portugal, and Italy, was not primarily a reflection of their economic fundamentals, nor yet a spontaneous movement of “the market,” but rather an orchestrated action of economic warfare. The dollar had been relentlessly falling through the late summer and autumn of 2009. It obviously occurred to various Anglo-American financiers that a diversionary attack on the euro, starting with some of the weaker Mediterranean or Southern European economies, would be an ideal means of relieving pressure on the battered US greenback. Since these degenerate elites are incapable of directly solving the problem of the dollar through increased production, full employment, and economic recovery, one of the few alternatives remaining to them is to create a situation in which the euro is collapsing faster, leaving the dollar as the beneficiary of some residual flight to quality or safe haven reflex.

This is what emerged during the first week of December with a speculative assault or bear raid against Greek and Spanish government bonds as well as the euro itself, accompanied by a scurrilous press campaign targeting the “PIIGS,” an acronym for the countries just named, coming from inside the bowels of Goldman Sachs. I have discussed this phenomenon several times over the last two to three weeks on my radio program on GCN.

Now comes concrete proof of this conspiracy in the form of a Feb. 8 “idea dinner,” held at the Manhattan townhouse of Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co, a boutique investment bank. Among those present were SAC Capital Advisors, David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital (a veteran of the fatal assault on Lehman Brothers in the late summer of 2008), Donald Morgan of Brigade Capital, and, most tellingly, Soros Fund Management. The consensus that emerged that night over the filet mignon was that Greek government bonds were the weak flank of the euro, and that once a Greek debt crisis had been detonated, all outcomes would be bad for the euro. The assembled predators agreed that Greece was the first domino in Europe. Donald Morgan was adamant that the Greek contagion could soon infect all sovereign debt in the world, including national, state, municipal and all other forms of government debt. This would mean California, the UK, and the US itself, among many others. The details of this at dinner were revealed in the headline story of the Wall Street Journal on Friday, February 26, 2010. Nor was this the only cabal in town intent on attacking the euro through the week Greek flank. The article cited suggests that GlobeOp Financial Services and Paulson & Co. are also piling on. The zombie banks were also heavily engaged. The article reported that Goldman Sachs, Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, and Barclays Bank of London were also assisting speculators in placing highly leveraged bearish bets against the euro. Note that these zombie banks are alive today because of US taxpayer money, in Barclay’s case through AIG.

It amounted to a deliberate attempt to create a large-scale world monetary crisis which would certainly bring with it the dreaded second wave of the current world economic depression. The creation of monetary chaos in Europe through the convulsive destruction of the euro under speculative attack would cripple commodity production in western Europe, severely undermining one of the dwindling areas of the world economy which are still functioning. The genocidal implications for humanity ought to be obvious, but the assembled hedge fund hyenas were not concerned with these consequences.

George Soros has been telling every media outlet that will listen that the euro is doomed to fall apart and break up over the short run. Soros even has a theory to deploy as part of his speculative attack. Soros argues that the fatal flaw or original Sin of the euro is that it was based on a common central bank among the participating countries, but lacked a common treasury and tax policy. This means that a country like Greece can no longer defend itself from a speculative attack on its bonds by the simple expedient of currency devaluation, since there is no more drachma, and the euro is controlled from Frankfurt, not Athens. British spokesmen are quick to point out that, even though the financial situation of London is far worse than that of Athens, the British government is already devaluing the pound through a downward dirty float.

Given Soros’s infamous track record, he must be taken seriously. In 1992, Soros became world famous through his attack on the European Rate Mechanism, which he executed by a highly leveraged speculative assault on the British pound, at the time one of the weaker members of the ERM. Soros’ speculative attack led to a pound devaluation and the ragged breakup of the ERM, and netted Soros £1 billion in profits. It was as if Soros had personally stolen a £20 note from every man, woman, and child in Britain. The speculative gains were no doubt gratifying, but the overriding political purpose of the assault was to sabotage that phase of European monetary policy. Read more…

War in the EU as Herman Van Rompuy makes ‘power grab’

Open warfare has broken out at the top of the European Union with governments accusing the new president, Herman Van Rompuy, of making a power grab.

National leaders are concerned Mr Van Rompuy, who had been expected to take a back seat role, is attempting to expand his position.

Germany and France backed his candidature on the understanding he would act as an EU “chairman” rather than a high-profile leader.

But the introduction of the Lisbon Treaty has triggered bitter in-fighting between Mr Van Rompuy, Baroness Ashton, the foreign minister, and the Commission over who is in charge of representing Europe on the global stage.

Diplomats are increasingly worried that amid the turf wars there is a danger of Brussels “mission creep” as squabbling EU chiefs try to enlarge their empires at the expense of each other and national sovereignty.

National governments, led by Germany, are incensed by an attempt by Mr Van Rompuy to take on new powers he claims were agreed at an informal summit two weeks ago.

There has been particular anger over a letter he sent to EU leaders following the chaotic Feb 11 meeting in Brussels that was dominated by the economic crisis in Greece and talk of a European bail-out.

Despite the fact that the meeting only lasted three hours, with Greece the main topic of discussion, Mr Van Rompuy insisted that eight to ten specific points were agreed, a view that has been disputed by most EU leaders.

One of the points of the classified letter, seen by The Daily Telegraph, gives Mr Van Rompuy the right to lead the EU’s negotiating team at G20 summits, usurping the role of national governments and the Commission.

“There was agreement to take better account of the international dimension. This includes a thorough preparation of the EU position for G20, allowing me to effectively and forcefully represent the EU’s positions in this important forum,” said the letter. Read more…

George Soros, ‘At Centre Of Hedge Funds Plot To Cash In On Fall Of The Euro’

A secretive group of Wall Street hedge fund bosses are said to be behind a plot to cash in on the decline of the euro.

Representatives of George Soros’s investment business were among an all-star line up of Wall Street investors at an ‘ideas dinner’ at a private townhouse in Manhattan, according to reports.

A spokesman for Soros Fund Management said the legendary investor did not attend the dinner on February 8, but did not deny that his firm was represented.

At the dinner, the speculators are said to have argued that the euro is likely to plunge in value to parity with the dollar.

The single currency has been under enormous pressure because of Greece’s debt crisis, plus financial worries in Portugal, Italy, Spain and Ireland.

But, it has also struggled because hedge funds have been placing huge bets on the currency’s decline, which could make the speculators hundreds of millions of pounds.

The euro traded at $1.51 in December, but has since fallen to $1.34. Details of the secretive dinner emerged days after Mr Soros, chairman of Soros

Fund Management, warned in a newspaper article that the euro could ‘fall apart’ even if the European Union can agree a deal to shore up support for stricken Greece.

Mr Soros, who made more than $1billion by currency speculation when the pound was ejected from the Exchange Rate Mechanism on Black Wednesday in 1992, believes the structure of the euro is ‘patently flawed’.

He said: ‘Makeshift assistance should be enough for Greece, but that leaves Spain, Italy, Portugal and Ireland.

‘Together they constitute too large a portion of euroland to be helped in this way.’

He believes that unless the European Commission is given sweeping powers over taxation and spending, the single currency will always be vulnerable to financial turbulence in individual states.

‘If member countries cannot take the next steps forward, the euro may fall apart,’ he added.

Last night, Greek prime minister George Papandreou hit back at the ’speculators’ who he blames for preying on the country’s troubles.

Following a visit by EU economic inspectors and experts from the International Monetary Fund, he told the country’s parliament that the worst fears about Greece’s economy had been confirmed.

Greece is desperate to restore the confidence of investors in its debt after revealing that the previous government understated its budget deficit by half.

Outlining the precarious nature of Greece’s finances, Mr Papandreou said: ‘There is only one dilemma: Will we let the country go bankrupt or will we react?

‘Will we let the speculators strangle us, or will we take our fate in our own hands?’

The Greek leader also called for more help from the EU with its debt crisis. Until now, the EU has offered political support but no bailout. Read more…

Bulgarians Force Van Rompuy to Clarify Speech on European Roots

An internet pressure group composed of more than 300 Bulgarians on Tuesday (23 February) forced European Council President Herman Van Rompuy to clarify a controversial speech in which he confined Europe’s cultural and historical roots to “Middle Age Latin Christianity” and 18th century Enlightenment.

The Bulgarians signed up to a Facebook cause urging Mr Van Rompuy to apologise or explain why he ignored their 1,300 plus year-old state along with Ancient Greece, Rome, the Byzantine Empire, the Thracian and Slavic civilisations, Orthodox Christianity and the Cyrillic Alphabet.

Addressing the public at Alliance Francaise in Paris last month Mr Rompuy said: “There are three moments of unification (of Europe). Since the 1960s we are in the third – that of economy and politics …The first two moments of European unification have been primarily the Latin Christianity of the Middle Ages and the Republic of Letters (The Enlightenment) of the 18th century.”

Bulgarian daily Trud accused Mr Rompuy of “drawing division lines” in Europe. The article stirred public discontent and hundreds of people signed up to a Facebook group in support of asking the former Belgian prime minister to explain himself.

Nadya Boneva, a 43 year-old civil engineer and founder of the initiative, wrote to the EU president personally and quickly received a reply: “I am …very sorry to learn that you feel that an important part of Bulgarian history was left out,” said the letter.

“There was no such intention. You can be assured that I am fully aware of the importance of Ancient Greece and Rome for our common civilisation. I am also aware of the important role Bulgaria and other civilisations have played ever since the early Middle Ages in the life of Europe,” it continued. Read more…

Baroness Ashton under fire after EU appoints US envoy

Baroness Ashton on Monday came under fire for allowing Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President, to appoint one of his aides as the European Union’s ambassador to Washington until 2015, without consulting national governments.

A meeting of EU foreign ministers expressed concern that Lady Ashton allowed Mr Barroso to pick the most important diplomatic post.

The row is expected to further damage Europe’s standing with the United States after Barack Obama pulled out of an EU-US summit because of confusion over who was in charge of European foreign policy.

The Daily Telegraph understands that Mr Barroso’s decision on Feb 17 to appoint Joao Vale de Almeida, a fellow Portuguese who served as Mr Barroso’s chief of staff for five years until last November, was taken without any consultation.

Mr Vale de Almeida’s appointment to replace John Bruton, a former Irish premier, as Washington ambassador was leaked in America 24 hours before the official decision was taken, before Lady Ashton or any national government was informed.

As High Representative, or foreign minister, a post created under the Lisbon Treaty, Lady Ashton is supposed to preserve the control of the Council of the EU, which represents national governments, over the creation of a new European diplomatic service.

Carl Bildt, Sweden’s foreign minister and a candidate for Lady Ashton’s post last year, has written to her, and other EU member states, in a strongly worded protest.

Mr Bildt accused Lady Ashton of compromising her job and of damaging the legitimacy of the EU’s foreign policy by caving in to the Commission.

“This nomination has been done without applying the very principles now under discussion where transparency, member states involvement and, above all, your roles as appointing authority are key elements,” he wrote.

“Member states’ participation in the staffing of the European External Action Service, at all levels, is crucial, not only for reasons of legitimacy abut also in order to create an esprit de corps of its won.”

Responding to the criticism, Lady Ashton claimed that the appointment was made under 2009 rules because it was unfinished business left over from last year – an argument rejected by foreign ministers. Read more…
